Reference encyclopedia of the American Indian
Barry T. Klein
"The Reference Encyclopedia of the American Indian is divided into four main sections. The first section contains source listings. Each listing gives address, phone number, contact and, in most cases, a brief description of activities and pertinent information. Listings are arranged either alphabetically or alpha-geographically. At the beginning of each section there is an explanatory note detailing the type of sources listed and the manner in which they are arranged. The length of each listing reflects the amount of material received from each source. Material has been researched directly from questionnaires or has been gathered from other reliable sources. For further information on any listed source, it is suggested that the reader write to the address or call the number given in the listing. The second section is solely Canadian listings; the third section of the book is a bibliography of approximately 10,000 in-print books. Listed alphabetically, each book gives basic bibliographic information. The alphabetical section is broken down into a subject categories section with corresponding titles listed for each category. A publishers index is provided at the end giving the publishers' addresses and phone numbers. The fourth section contains approximately 3,000 listings of which there are more than 1,500 biographical sketches of prominent Native Americans involved in Indian Affairs, education, healthcare, business, the arts and professions, as well as non-Indians active in Indian affairs, history, art, anthropology, archaeology, etc., and the many fields to which the subject of the American Indian is related" -- Introduction.
